Mets might have a Marcus Semien problem

The New York Mets thought they were solving an opening at second base this offseason when they traded Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien.

Right now, though, Semien is looking more like a problem.

The veteran second baseman is just 2-for-22 to begin the season, and when you actually look at it, it's even worse than that.

Semien's first hit of the year was when Oneil Cruz lost that poorly hit flyball in the sun and had it land on the ground a few feet away from him.

His second hit came on an infield single that bounced off the pitcher's glove -- in another universe, it may have also been an out.

It's still not the biggest sample size ever, but it's not like Semien is in his prime anymore.

Semien's average dropped from 2023 to 2024, and then again from 2024 to 2025.

Last season with the Rangers, Semien batted .230 with a .669 OPS.

This spring, another small sample but still, Semien batted .205.

He is 35 years old now, and while Semien is a three-time All Star, two-time Gold Glover and two-time Silver Slugger, it certainly makes sense that he wouldn't quite be the player he once was anymore.

The problem is if he's not much of a player at all anymore. The Mets do have Jorge Polanco who they could start incorporating more at second base if Semien needs to rest, but that wasn't the initial plan. Semien is a guy who plays pretty much every game of the season and doesn't come out of the lineup.

If he doesn't start hitting, his lineup spot won't be particularly safe, though.
