Mets may not trade Francisco Lindor — and here's why

The New York Mets may trade anyone before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, including Francisco Lindor. The Mets shortstop hasn't looked great this season, but his reputation as a second-half hitter can not be denied. But that's not the only reason why David Stearns & Co. may not look to, or let's just say afford to move him.

Lindor's 10-year, $341 million contract, signed in March 2021, is the biggest reason, according to Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer. Beginning in 2026, the contract now includes a full no-trade clause.

This would mean the Mets will need to first approve of Lindor before going ahead with any potential deal. Moreover, finding a team that can take most of his remaining $186.4 million salary is in itself a big hurdle.

According to Rymer, unless the Mets can move Lindor "in a bad contract swap or by simply swallowing most or all of the $186.4 million he's still owed," the shortstop is staying in Queens.

At 32, Lindor still has some value to give back, and it might be disastrous for the Mets front office to think otherwise.

Why Mets should consider sticking with Francisco Lindor

Francisco Lindor has been underwhelming this season, hitting just .233 with .316 OBP and .401 slugging after 45 games. He has only managed six home runs and two stolen bases. We're at the halfway mark of the season and historically this is when Lindor starts to improve.

Just two years ago, Lindor emerged as an MVP candidate after a dramatic turnaround in the second half. In 2020 (a shortened season), Lindor's second-half production was way better than first half (112 wRC+ vs. 89 wRC+).

Therefore, Lindor has a well-established track record of delivering after the All-Star break.

The Mets can consider these stats before deciding on Lindor already. Though they may find themselves outside of a postseason spot now, a great second season could allow for a comeback that many won't see coming in NL.
