The New York Mets had a miserable finish to the 2025 MLB season.
All the way to the final week, they looked likely to grab an NL Wild Card spot. But then their collapse completed itself, and they were on the outside looking in.
The Mets still have lots of talent, and they can always sign another big free agent with Steve Cohen's money.
But they might also need a change in energy. That's what MLB.com's Will Leitch thinks.
Leitch suggested in a new article that the Mets sign back Jose Iglesias after a year away. He was crucial in the Mets' 2024 season.
"You know what the Mets could really use after that late-season collapse? Good vibes," Leitch writes. "Who better to return to Citi Field, then, than Iglesias, the unofficial Vibe Captain of the 2024 team, Mr. OMG himself? Iglesias, somewhat improbably, had the best year of his career in '24, and while it didn’t go well for him in San Diego this past season, well, maybe there was just something about New York that worked for him. The Mets aren’t exactly short on infielders, but Iglesias wouldn’t cost much, and if it didn’t work out for him on the field, what better way to start off a coaching career than letting him hang around with the team -- and the fanbase -- that appreciated him the most?"
Iglesias has never been a huge hitter, but he's an exquisite fielder at shortstop. The Mets wouldn't actually need him to play often, given that that's Francisco Lindor's spot.
But in the clubhouse and in a limited role, Iglesias could still be useful.
And if he really does change the vibes for the Mets, then it'd be a signing worthwhile no matter what.
