The New York Mets have been very busy this offseason. They added several pitchers in free agency and of course won the sweepstakes for outfielder Juan Soto.
However, some questions remain unanswered. Slugger Pete Alonso is a free agent still, though his market has been relatively slow moving. Where he will sign is unknown, even though the Mets appear to be the top team in on him.
According to Dayn Perry of CBS Sports, Alonso is likely to remain a member of the Mets in 2025.
"Signs point to the strong possibility of a New York Mets-Pete Alonso reunion, in part because the free agent first baseman's market has not been especially strong," Perry wrote.
"Alonso, 30, has been a rich power source for years. Over his six seasons with the Mets, Alonso amassed 226 home runs, a tally that includes his 53-homer campaign as a rookie."
Alonso hit .240 with 34 home runs and 88 RBI during the regular season and he helped guide the Mets to the National League Championship Series last October.
The 30-year-old slugger is a former Rookie of the Year and a four-time All-Star. New York appears likely to offer him a short-term contract with a high AAV and opt-outs after each of the first two years.
If the Mets can't sign re-sign him, they might be forced to pivot to either Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado. Perry notes too that Alonso has declined slightly over the last few years and has struggled defensively, which could be affecting his market and might stand to reason why the Mets want to give him a short-term deal.
It will be interesting to see how his market develops and if the Mets are able to keep him.
