Mets' Juan Soto delivers delusional response to questions about effort, hustle

The New York Mets are 29-19, on a two-game losing streak and have lost the National League East lead. The last two losses have sparked a conversation on Juan Soto's effort.

During Monday night's game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, Soto smashed a ball to left field and stood around home plate admiring it. Unfortunately for Soto, the ball bounced off the Green Monster and he was held to a very long single. Usually, a ball that hits the top of the wall in Fenway means extra bases.

That came on the heels of a moment in the Mets' 8-2 loss to the New York Yankees where Soto failed to beat out a ground ball that DJ LeMahieu had to dive to stop and made a throw to first base from his knees. Reporters asked Soto about his lack of hustle, and his answer was delusional.

"I think I've been hustling pretty hard. If you see it today, you could tell," Soto told reporters after the game.

It's not hard to watch the long single on Monday night and determine that he was indeed not hustling. He was actually doing the exact opposite and watching a deep fly ball. His manager, Carlos Mendoza, seemed to agree that Soto did not hustle out of the box on the play.

"He thought he had it. In this ballpark with that wall right there, you gotta get out of the box. We'll discuss that," Mendoza told reporters.
