The New York Mets traded utility man Jeff McNeil to the Athletics in exchange for 17-year-old pitching prospect Yordan Rodriguez. As part of the deal, the Mets also sent over some cash to cover McNeil's salary. The utility man was a two-time All-Star and 2022 NL batting champion.

McNeil has played for only one franchise since entering the big leagues in 2018. He was selected in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB draft by the $3.2 billion team (via Forbes). Days after the trade was finalized, McNeil shared an emotional post on social media, reflecting his time with the Mets and the fanbase who made it feel like home.

"New York will always be a part of my story," McNeil wrote. "The Mets organization is all I have ever known since being drafted in 2013, and it has been an incredible run. I’m incredibly thankful for every moment, every lesson, and every memory along the way. I’m especially grateful for the fans who welcomed me and my family and made New York feel like home for so long."

McNeil thanked the ownership, front office, coaching staff and teammates for playing a meaningful role in this journey. He now looks forward to embracing his next chapter with the Athletics.

In eight seasons with the Mets, McNeil hit .284 with 920 hits, 80 home runs and 367 RBIs.

Mets president David Stearns acknowledged Jeff McNeil's contribution

After the trade, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns issued a statement, acknowledging the contribution from Jeff McNeil for the time over the past eight years. He also welcomes the new pitching prospect the franchise received from the Athletics as part of the trade.

"I want to thank Jeff for his time and contributions to the organization," Stearns said. "He was drafted by the team and grew up in our system. I wish Jeff and his family success and good luck going forward. We are excited to bring Yordan into our system. He’s a young right-hander with a promising future."

The 33-year old was dealt as part of a major roster shakeup from the franchise after they failed to make the postseason in 2025.

Earlier, the Mets lost Pete Alonso to free agency, as he signed with the Baltimore Orioles and they also dealt Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for second baseman Marcus Semien.
