The New York Mets are coming into the 2026 MLB season with plenty of optimism. There should be no doubt that this Mets team can contend for a World Series.
However, there is one big issue that the Mets have to make sure to resolve this season, and it's in part their own doing. The Mets' offense, completely overhauled amid a defensive revamp, needs to perform well.
As Bradford Doolittle of ESPN highlighted, the Mets have a "tough needle" to thread with this offensive and defensive overhaul, as things could easily go south if the top-five offense from a year ago doesn't return amid an effort to improve the defense.
Mets have a narrow path to success after lineup overhaul
"Pivotal number: 5. The Mets ranked fifth in weighted runs created plus (wRC+) last season," Doolittle writes. "... Stearns' moves this winter were largely aimed at improving a defense that finished 19th in Statcast's fielding runs metric. A key to this season will be seeing that No. 19 ranking improve without those offensive rankings slipping much if at all. It's a tough needle to thread."
The Mets' offense was great last season, finishing in the top-five by wRC+. But the front office, led by David Stearns and Steve Cohen, conducted a major overhaul of the lineup.
Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, and others were moved on from in trades and other roster moves. Compared to last-year's lineup, only four players are returning.
Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, Francisco Alvarez, and Brett Baty are the only players returning from last season's offense. While those are some of the key players, the Mets' offense will have a tough time getting top-five marks this season.

Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., Carson Benge, Jorge Polanco, and Marcus Semien make up the new faces in the Mets lineup and on defense.
While they've looked fine through two games, there will be plenty of questions about the offense and the defense, all season long.
Seeing the offense stay as good as it was last year, or at least remaining inside the top-10 by wRC+, would be a huge win, especially if the defense improves from their 19th overall ranking last year.
But accomplishing that feat, of an improved defense and just as good offense, is easier said than done with such a new-look lineup.
This will be a key storyline to follow all year, as this new-look Mets roster tries to help turn things around following a collapse in 2025.
