The New York Mets and All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso failed to reach an agreement in free agency and Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles to end his seven-year tenure with the NL East franchise.

With Alonso leaving for the American League this offseason, the Mets signed versatile All-Star infielder Jorge Polanco on a two-year, $40 million deal.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said that they signed Polanco keeping in mind his ability to play multiple infield positions, including first base.

“We are excited to add Jorge to our organization and expect him to be a big part of our team over the next two years,” Stearns said. “Jorge’s athleticism and versatility on both sides of the ball make him a perfect fit as we continue to build out our team. As we stand now, we would anticipate Jorge playing first base, DH, and bouncing around to other positions as needed.”

However, fans on social media didn't appreciate the idea of Polanco playing multiple infield positions.

"And just like that we’ve never been more cooked."

"What a disgrace." "This genius wants to talk about run prevention and then sighs someone who’s sucked at every position he’s played and wants him to play a position he’s never played."

"Ridiculous. 20 mil for a utility man. So far Stearns has been BAD at his job."

"This coward still hasn’t spoken about letting go of Diaz and Alonso and the soft New York media doesn’t even say anything about it. Pathetic."

While Stearns talked about Polanco playing first base for the Mets, the former Seattle Mariners star has predominantly played shortstop and third base, playing just one game at first base in his 12-year career.

Mets continue pursuit of All-Star free agent after Jorge Polanco's signing

Jorge Polanco slashed .265/.326/.495 with 30 doubles, 26 home runs and 78 RBIs in 138 games last season. However, he is not expected to be the only offensive addition in the offseason as the Mets are linked with other All-Star caliber players.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Mets are "very in" for All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger, who could also play first base. The former NL MVP had a strong season with the New York Yankees last season and has also been linked with a return to the AL East franchise in free agency.
