Mets have 1 obvious offseason need to return to MLB postseason

This season did not go as the New York Mets had hoped. 

That's been said time and time again.  

The answer is fairly simple: the Mets missed the postseason, which does not allow them to chase their ultimate goal of winning a World Series. 

Now, New York's front office and owner Steve Cohen turn their attention to the 2027 season, if there is one. 

With regard to the starting rotation, the Mets could use another arm or two to help emerging ace Nolan McLean. 

"But unless they are irrationally confident in Tylor Megill coming back better than ever after missing all of 2026 to Tommy John surgery, they definitely need to address their starting rotation," Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote. 

The Mets will have more money to spend on the rotation if All-Star infielder Bo Bichette opts out of his deal. But that remains to be seen. 

"Nolan McLean is a solid ace. Christian Scott, Zac Thornton and Jonah Tong could all factor into the mix," Miller wrote. "However, that quartet has made a combined total of 90 MLB starts, and it's hard to imagine/justify letting it ride with what they've got in-house."

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal is one possibility for the Mets.

However, they could compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and other big-market teams for the prized left-hander. 

Otherwise, veterans like Robbie Ray, Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman, and Zac Gallen could be names the Mets consider.
