Mets could lose Pete Alonso to 'surprise landing spot' in AL

The New York Mets have been trying to bring Pete Alonso back to Queens but no deal has been reached. As Opening Day inches closer, a surprise team could steal Alonso away.

While listing potential landing spots for Alonso and other remaining free agents, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller noted that the Seattle Mariners could be a "surprise landing spot" for the Mets slugger.

"What would be surprising is if the Mariners found the money to make it happen, considering they are constantly acting like they can't afford to rub two nickels together and have to hope and pray they can budget their way to a .540 winning percentage in any given season," wrote Miller. "As a result, if they did sign Alonso, it's likely that trading away the three years and $72.5M left on Luis Castillo's contract would happen almost immediately thereafter."

Alonso is a four-time All-Star and has hit more home runs than anyone not named Aaron Judge since he made his debut. The Mariners' offense would get a huge boost by adding him. As time passes, Alonso could be more likely to sign a shorter deal with opt-outs, similar to Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman last winter.

Bellinger, Chapman and Alonso are all represented by Scott Boras. Miller also noted that the most likely landing spots for Alonso are the Mets and San Francisco Giants. However, at this point in the offseason, nothing can be taken off the table.
