Mets blockbuster trade pitch lands Orioles All-Star in 3-player swap

If this past weekend proved anything, it's that the New York Mets are far from invincible.

Despite a sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, the 45-27 Mets still have the best record in the National League. But the Rays exposed that on any given weekend, the Mets' offense and pitching staff can go cold at a moment's notice.

Addressing the offense could be key for a Mets team that hopes to make a World Series run. Starting center fielder Tyrone Taylor went 0-for-7 in the Rays series, which only served as proof to many fans that their team needs a better hitter at the position.

Will the Mets address that shortcoming by trading for a former All-Star center fielder?

On Monday, Baltimore Orioles on SI's Dylan Sanders suggested that the Mets could trade for Baltimore center fielder Cedric Mullins if they sent pitching prospect Nolan McLean and outfield prospect Eli Serrano in return.

"One contending team that should be interested is the New York Mets. With Jose Siri injured, it has mostly been Tyrone Taylor patrolling center. Neither of those players would be very promising to see starting on a playoff team," Sanders wrote.

"(This trade) would be two top-30 prospects from New York, which is a fair price for someone that is an instant upgrade for them and could even be the type of bat to push their offense over the edge come the postseason."

Mullins, 30, is slashing .236/.323/.457 on the season, good for a 123 OPS+. If there is a concern, it's the fact that his defense, which has been good at times, has not aged well, as he's posted -9 defensive runs saved in center this year.

If New York can stomach half a season of iffy range in center, though, they might be able to walk away with an upgrade for a lineup that may need a jolt.
