The New York Mets spent the last offseason signing veterans on cheap, bounce-back deals.
Fortunately for the Mets, the front office clearly knows what they are doing, and they hit on the majority of their deals. One that worked out was the signing of All-Star hurler Luis Severino.
He struggled in 2023 with the New York Yankees but he returned to form in 2024. Severino was healthy and logged a 3.91 ERA across 31 starts for New York. The Mets gave him the qualifying offer, but he surely will land a multi-year deal this winter.
It's unclear where he will go, but Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer predicted that Severino will end up signing a three-year, $48 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles.
"Severino would arguably be wise to accept the qualifying offer," Rymer said. "He had a good year in 2024, but it came on the heels of a ruinous five-season stretch in which he appeared in only 45 games because of injuries. It seems doubtful he will actually accept the QO, though.
"He's been born again at 30, notably with a more balanced pitch mix that now features a sweeper that held hitters to a .139 average. He should want to market himself as a top-of-the-rotation type. Signs with Baltimore Orioles for three years, $48 million."
Severino was a great piece for the Mets, but they likely will be looking elsewhere this offseason. New York currently is pursuing Juan Soto and could look at other big pieces like Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. Sadly, Severino's time with the Mets could be short.
