Mercedes Moné has just suffered an upset tonight on AEW Dynamite. She has just gone through an unexpected setback in her conquest to capture more championship gold.

The CEO is currently in possession of 12 belts, surpassing the record set by Ultimo Dragon of holding 10 belts simultaneously. She is currently gunning for two more belts. She is entered into the tournament to crown the inaugural AEW Women's Tag Team Champions, and she is also set to challenge Kris Statlander for her women's world title at Full Gear.

Moments ago on Dynamite, the unlikely partnership of Mercedes Moné and Athena competed in their opening contest in the tag team tournament against the Babes of Wrath. This bout was filled with two duos who have only recently come together, so there was no clear victor from the start of the contest.

Mercedes and Athena had great momentum across the contest as they showed why they were two of the longest champions in the business today. But to the surprise of many, Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron were able to hold their own.

At a crucial juncture in the match, the Forever Champion seemed to be getting desperate and thus called on Billie Starkz. This interference distracted the referee, but Kris Statlander came out to even the odds.

Stat then set her sights on Mercedes Moné, and she looked as if she was seeing a ghost. This left Athena all alone in the ring to fend for herself. She tried using her ROH Women's title to blindside Willow, but she was countered, and she got hit with a Doctor Bomb. Harley, who was the legal woman, slid in and hit her finisher, as she scored an upset for her team.

Many believed that Mercedes Moné and Athena were the favorites for this tournament, but they have just been eliminated in the opening round. The Babes of Wrath will now move on a take on the Sisters of Sin in the next round.
