Klay Thompson, long regarded as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, had a bizarre moment on Wednesday night. In the fourth quarter of the Dallas Mavericks’ 101-99 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, the veteran guard appeared to accidentally shoot the ball backward.
Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg found Thompson in the corner for a 3-pointer, but as Pelicans forward Saddiq Bey closed out on defense, the four-time champion awkwardly launched the ball behind him instead of toward the basket.

Thompson came off the bench for the first time as a Maverick, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists, including three made 3s.
Bey powered the Pelicans with season highs of 22 points and nine rebounds, leading New Orleans to its second straight win. Flagg topped the Mavericks with 20 points and nine rebounds, though Dallas has now dropped three in a row.
Steph Curry praises Klay Thompson’s shooting form
Despite Wednesday’s misfire, Klay Thompson’s shooting form remains elite, at least according to NBA all-time 3-point leader Steph Curry.
During his appearance on LeBron James and Steve Nash’s podcast, “Mind the Game,” Curry called Thompson’s mechanics flawless.
“I would teach Klay’s form to anybody who says, ‘Hey, how do I shoot the basketball?’ Clips of Klay. That’s freaking perfect. 10 out of 10. No notes,” Curry said.Over his career, Klay Thompson has shot 41.0% from 3. In his 11 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, where he won four championships alongside Curry, he hit 41.3% of his attempts from deep.
Those numbers, however, have dipped in Dallas, where he’s shooting just 26.2% from beyond the arc this season, a likely factor in Mavericks coach Jason Kidd’s decision to move him to the bench in favor of D’Angelo Russell as the team searches for consistency.
