The Dallas Mavericks got some good news regarding star rookie Cooper Flagg ahead of their matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. The Mavs say that Flagg will be available for the game against New Orleans after he missed the first game of his career due to illness against the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.

Cooper Flagg to be available vs. Pelicans after missing first game of career

The fact that Flagg will be available automatically makes the game a more intriguing watch. Plus, both teams should be desperate for a win after slow starts to the season.

New Orleans currently sits dead last in the Western Conference standings with a record of 2-13, and Dallas isn't much better. At 4-12, the Mavs are 13th in the West. Together, the teams have a combined record of 6-25.

The matchup will be the second of the season between Dallas and New Orleans, as the Pelicans pulled out a 101-99 win over the Mavericks earlier this month. However, Pelicans star forward Zion Williamson was not available for that game, so the contest on Friday night will represent the first career matchup between Williamson and Flagg – two top picks, two former Duke Blue Devils, and two of the most highly hyped prospects in recent memory.

On the season, Flagg is averaging 15.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per performance. He's flashed a lot of promise with his play, and earned some high praise in the process.

“I think that he’s going to be a hell of a player,” Houston Rockets star forward Kevin Durant recently said of Flagg. “I think that he’s going to be such a nightmare… that… he’ll be considered one of the best of all time.”

Since Flagg has been basically the only silver lining of Dallas' season so far, it's good that his first stint on the sideline didn't last long.
