Matt Kuchar won the RBC Heritage outing in 2014 and was awarded the event’s signature tartan plaid pattern jacket. Now, the nine-time has jokingly called it a ‘terrible coat,’ inspired by traditional Scottish golf attire, while admitting to using it every year as a Christmas wear.

Kuchar won the PNC Championship 2025 on Sunday with his 18-year-old son Cameron. The duo bagged the $200,000 prize paycheck and the coveted Willie Park Trophy, a distinctive red leather belt with sterling silver embellishments. The Kuchar duo celebrated with the unique belt following the presentation. Interestingly, Matt soon revealed that he plans to style his new belt with the RBC Heritage jacket this holiday season.

The 47-year-old jokingly added that the two red wearable awards are in “perfect Christmas color.” His comment came after Cameron Kuchar said “for sure” when asked if he would wear the belt for the holiday with family.

Matt Kuchar said, as quoted by ASAP Sports:

“I have got a terrible coat from The Heritage tournament, from the Hilton Head tournament, that comes out over Christmas. It’s the perfect Christmas color… So, it comes out once a year over Christmas. I look forward to bringing it out. And I certainly love to matching it with this. This is something I’ll never forget.”

For the unversed, The RBC Heritage tartan plaid is uniquely celebrated in the golf world. Notably, the jacket carries the tournament’s identity with the official ‘Plaid Nation Day’ celebrated annually on the Saturday of the event. The 2025 edition of the event was won by Justin Thomas, who claimed his 16th PGA Tour victory and received the plaid at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Matt Kuchar gets emotional after PNC Championship win

Matt Kuchar lost his father Peter (73) in February this year. The PGA Tour star who started off the year by grieving the loss ended his season with a win with his son Cameron on Sunday at the PNC Championship. He made a record-smashing performance that led to an 18-under 54 and a whopping seven-shot victory.

Following the win, Matt opened up about his loss and how he dealt with it. The golfer’s voice cracked while speaking about how the win is made special by his dad ‘looking down’ on him from above.

An emotional Matt Kuchar said, as quoted by ASAP Sports:

“I think we all have so much to be grateful for. To be part of this event, just to be included in this event, we’re certainly grateful for, to do this - I don’t know if you believe in karma, if you believe in fate, whatever you believe in, there’s something - something magical that does exist. I’m a believer in God that Dad is up above looking down… Just miss Pops.”

Matt said his father would’ve shared “some big fist pumps” and shown a “lot of pride” if he would have been present to watch his son and grand-child win at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in their home state Florida.
