Marlins get unsurprising Sandy Alcantara trade update from MLB insider

The Miami Marlins have been a seller in recent seasons, and that continued at this year's trade deadline despite having a relatively decent chance to make a postseason push.

Otto Lopez, Kyle Stowers, and plenty of other big-name players will be in trade rumors once the offseason begins. But one name is likely to be back into the conversation like normal.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Sandy Alcantara is expected to be of interest to teams, and calls will come Miami's way trying to land the Cy Young ace this winter.

"Teams will try once again to pry ace Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins this winter," Nightengale writes. "He has been sensational of late, yielding a 1.99 ERA since July 4, pitching at least six innings in all 10 starts."

Alcantara had a rough 2025 season, and the Marlins elected to keep him instead of trading him at the deadline. His 5.36 ERA on the season did not spark a ton of optimism.

However, they also kept him through the 2025-2026 offseason, giving him one more chance this season with the team where he's turned into a superstar.

It was a great decision, as he has a 3.46 ERA in 29 starts this season with 3.4 bWAR for the Marlins. In 189.2 innings pitched, he has 140 strikeouts and a 113 ERA+.

While he might not be the Cy Young-caliber ace he was back in 2022, he's an innings-eater who is still a good pitcher.

At 30 years old and under club control through the 2027 season, the Marlins righty would surely draw serious trade interest this upcoming offseason.

While they've kept him for a while now, this offseason is probably the time they'll trade him, if they have any such intention to move on from their franchise ace.

Ideally, they re-sign him to a long-term deal to keep him with the Marlins for the rest of his career. But rather than lose him for nothing after 2027, trading him this upcoming offseason might be the best path forward for Miami.

Fortunately, as Nightengale notes, calls will be coming, and the Marlins will have a good chance to trade their ace.
