Mariners get contract update on Eugenio Suarez's free agency

The Seattle Mariners didn't get the best version of Eugenio Suarez.

The slugging third baseman hit 36 home runs before the trade deadline in 2025 for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After he was moved to Seattle, he hit just 13, with much worse metrics, too.

Suarez was ticketed for free agency at the end of the season, and now he's on the open market.

That doesn't mean the Mariners have to give him up. They still need a third baseman, and Suarez remains unsigned.

MLB.com's Andrew Simon has actually called Suarez the "perfect fit" for the Mariners in free agency.

"A fan favorite and beloved clubhouse presence during his first stint in Seattle (2022-23), Suárez didn’t exactly come up big in his Trade Deadline return this past summer (.682 OPS in 53 games, after a huge first half in Arizona)," Simon wrote. "Still, there would be reason beyond simple sentiment for the Mariners to keep the relationship going. Ben Williamson (.604 OPS as a rookie) is currently projected as the Opening Day starter at third, and even if top prospect Colt Emerson is ready to take over at some point in 2026, the Mariners have room to slide Suárez to DH, even after signing lefty-masher Rob Refsnyder to a one-year deal this week. (Seattle has the 22nd-best projection at third and 15th at DH.) Suárez has thump left in his bat, and he could still help the Mariners make good on their legitimate championship aspirations."

If the Mariners don't get Suarez, they likely have two in-house options. One would be glove-first Ben Williamson. The other would be top prospect Colt Emerson, who has come up as a shortstop.

Seattle probably wouldn't mind getting Suarez back if the price was right. It remains to be seen whether it will be fair value to keep him in town.
