Maple Leafs taken to task for Sergei Bobrovsky, Darren Raddysh contracts

It's easy enough to see what the Toronto Maple Leafs were doing with their additions of Darren Raddysh and Sergei Bobrovsky.

Raddysh, in a sign-and-trade from the Lightning, and Bobrovsky, as a free agent from the Panthers, are both proven veteran contributors.

Ironically, they're coming off very different years. Raddysh had the best season of his career by far in 2025-26. It was a struggle of a season for Bobrovsky, a decline from back-to-back Stanley Cups.

Either way, they've proven they can perform in the NHL, and so the Maple Leafs went out to pursue them and land them this offseason.

Bobrovsky got a three-year deal at $7 million per year.

Raddysh got a huge eight-year, $8.5 million per year contract.

They've been called a combo of two of the worst contracts of the offseason by Daily Faceoff's Scott Maxwell as part of a new article on Tuesday.

"Bobrovsky and Raddysh’s contracts fall under the same umbrella for me with most of the Leafs’ offseason moves," Maxwell writes. "Both contracts have the potential to succeed, and Toronto is bringing in two players who could make a difference if they live up to their resumes. But between Bobrovsky’s deteriorating play and age, and Raddysh’s small sample size and term, both contracts could blow up in the Leafs’ face."

Toronto wasn't really in a position to sit back and be patient. After a brutal season, the Leafs made these moves in an effort at an immediate bounceback.

They may even achieve that in the near-term, but these contracts will last longer than that. By the end of these deals, they may make things harder on Toronto again.
