Mets' Freddy Peralta scouted by NL West club as MLB trade deadline looms

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the New York Mets are almost guaranteed to be sellers.

One of the top names that could be available on the trade market is right-hander Freddy Peralta.

The Mets acquired the two-time All-Star from the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason, but things haven't gone smoothly in Queens.

Due to Peralta's expiring contract, he's a logical candidate to be moved. The Mets would rather acquire a prospect or two for his services rather than lose him for nothing this winter.

Several clubs make sense for Peralta, writes The Athletic's Will Sammon

"About one-third of the 30 teams, if not more, are potential contenders needing rotation help. The Chicago Cubs are desperate for it, making them an obvious team to watch for Peralta, who played six seasons under Chicago manager Craig Counsell in Milwaukee," Sammon wrote.

Other clubs have gone and watched Peralta in person to get a better idea of what he looks like at this point in the year.

"The San Diego Padres scouted the Mets-Braves series. The Toronto Blue Jays make sense," Sammon added. "And, especially because of Peralta’s salary, the Tampa Bay Rays are worth monitoring, too. That’s just naming a few."

As Sammon detailed, the Padres sent scouts to watch Peralta. They are also one of the teams that could target Tarik Skubal.

San Diego has the best closer in baseball in Mason Miller, but adding a starter or two would do wonders for their postseason hopes.

The durability of Walker Buehler, Griffin Canning, and Michael King is a significant question mark.
