Anthony Davis has been front and center of headlines after the Dallas Mavericks fired former GM Nico Harrison on Tuesday. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, on Friday’s “Howdy Partners” podcast, said that Harrison had AD’s medical team on the team payroll, a luxury not afforded to Doncic. Harrison also fired Casey Smith, the team’s former director of health and performance and a close friend of Doncic, in 2023.
Fans reacted to news about how Harrison gave Davis perks that Doncic never had:

@TheDunkCentral @BannedMacMahon Nico was just anti Luka
MacMahon reported in April that things fell apart for Nico Harrison and Luka Doncic 18 months before the trade with Anthony Davis happened. Harrison also sent strength and conditioning coach Jeremy Holsopple and manual therapist Casey Spangler packing after the Mavs reached the 2024 NBA Finals. Holsopple was hired by the Lakers in October, a nod to his importance to Doncic.
According to MacMahon, the trio helped Luka Doncic’s “major cultural transition” and became “confidantes” to the Slovenian. Harrison reportedly called them “enablers” to Doncic. The former Mavs president of basketball operations replaced them with people who he claimed were "better.”
Meanwhile, an abdominal strain limited Anthony Davis to nine games following his trade to the Mavericks. This season, he has played just five times due to a left calf strain.
Anthony Davis’ medical staff and Mavericks’ director of health and performance clashed over AD’s potential return date
Anthony Davis’ medical team cleared him to play Saturday against the Washington Wizards. Dallas Mavericks’ director of health and performance, Johann Bilsborough, questioned that decision, according to Tim MacMahon. Davis was listed as questionable since getting the green light to return, but has not played yet.
Patrick Dumont, the team governor, reportedly stepped in to settle the impasse. He asked for “medical data” supporting the contention that Davis would not aggravate his left calf injury, per MacMahon. Dumont sided with Hillsborough over AD’s medical team, opting to “err on the side of caution.”
Heading into Friday’s showdown against the LA Clippers, Davis had a questionable tag. Roughly an hour before tip-off, the Mavericks put him back on the inactive list.
Davis remains out until Dumont gives him the clearance to play.
