As Lane Kiffin is expected to be presented with a massive offer from LSU, the Ole Miss Rebels coach is on the verge of a historic deal. That being said, if he agrees trade in Oxford for Baton Rouge.
According to Yahoo Sports Ross Dellenger, the Tigers have discussed a seven-year, incentive-heavy contract worth at least $90 million, a figure that would vault Kiffin into the top tier of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
While the $12.8 million per year is attractive for Kiffin, that's not what should make him extremely elated at the possibility to be at LSU. The commitment of more than $25 million in NIL roster investment per year is huge.
This means funding a program to be a dynasty for years to come in the new era. Would Ole Miss be able to counter this? Not likely. Thus why LSU is offer it. The frosting on the cake doesn't get much sweeter. Needless to say it's an unprecedented number, and one to provide a nice selling point.
There are two takeaways from this. With a reported contract offer and the details yet to be released, this is no longer about a high-profile coach getting rich and fighting for recruiting scraps. Not that way at all.
Also, if Kiffin turns down the position for whatever reason, LSU has shown their hand in a major way. Right now, if Kiffin stays in Oxford for the long haul, the next head coach is going to want a similar package. Plain and simple, this could be either greatest moment for the program or a bust.
The development comes on the same day Kiffin and Ole Miss leadership agreed to delay any public announcement about his future until after the Egg Bowl on Nov. 29.
