Liverpool face off with Aston Villa in a huge Premier League match at Anfield this Saturday.
Liverpool's recent slide in form and Aston Villa's own resurgence means that these sides come into this game both on 15 points, with Liverpool one spot above Villa in 7th by virtue of a better goal difference.
So can Arne Slot's side rebound here, or will Unai Emery's team pick up what would be a massive victory?
Liverpool vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Although Aston Villa's wild 7-2 win over Liverpool in 2020 is one of the most memorable Premier League games of all time, it remains the only win that the Villains hold over the Reds since their promotion in 2019. Liverpool have, in fact, won five of their last six matches with Villa at Anfield.
- Liverpool are coming into this match on the back of another remarkable loss, this time to Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. The Reds have now lost six of their last seven games, including their last four in the Premier League, with their only win coming over Frankfurt in the Champions League.
- Aston Villa, on the other hand, have been on a fantastic run in recent weeks. They have won six of their last seven games, with the only defeat coming to Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League. Unai Emery's side have won their last four Premier League games, and have recorded back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Manchester City.
- Liverpool's defensive woes have been an issue for them throughout the season, even when they were winning matches. The Reds have conceded 14, more than any other side currently in the top ten of the Premier League barring Manchester United, and they have only kept two clean sheets in their opening nine games.
- While Aston Villa have climbed into 8th place thanks to their recent winning run, they have continued to have trouble in front of goal. With just nine goals scored this season, only the bottom three teams have managed fewer.
Liverpool vs Aston Villa Prediction
This is a very tricky game to predict. On one hand, Liverpool have almost always beaten Aston Villa in recent years, particularly at Anfield.
On the other, though, the reigning champions' recent run of form has been putrid, and Arne Slot appears to be running out of ideas when it comes to turning things around.
The Dutchman did rest plenty of key players in this week's loss to Crystal Palace, but this game might be too early for them to turn their form around with, particularly as Villa looked brilliant in their win over Manchester City.
This one could go either way - but the prediction is a narrow away win.
Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Aston Villa
