Left erupts at plans to make June ‘Traditional Nuclear Family Month’ as well as Pride month

Critics are blasting a Fresno County proposal to designate June as “Traditional Nuclear Family Month” alongside Pride Month, setting up a heated political fight over family values and the LGBTQ community.

The resolution, brought forward by Fresno County Supervisor Garry Bredefeld, defines a nuclear family as a mother and father raising biological, foster, or adopted children.

Bredefeld said the proposal aims to celebrate traditional families and their place in society.

“It’s really about celebrating families. Traditional families. It’s basically recognizing them and celebrating their values,” Bredefeld told KSEE24.

But the proposal has already drawn opposition from fellow Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez — who argued the measure excludes many families and unfairly singles out the LGBTQ community.

“Nobody is against traditional family values,” Chavez explained.

“The only question is, why do you have to put in a language that specifically references this, LGBT community, trying to impose their values? Nobody’s doing that.”

Bredefeld said the resolution partly responds to what he calls efforts to “indoctrinate” children in schools, libraries, zoos, and sports programs.

He also argued Fresno County would be joining a broader movement taking shape elsewhere in the country.

“The state of Tennessee, they passed Nuclear Family Month in June,” he added. “I’ve looked at other states that are now doing it as well, and I thought, Fresno County needs to do this as well.”

Chavez pushed back against the proposal’s main message, noting that many households do not fit the traditional family structure described in the resolution.

“Not all of us are very fortunate to have two parents in the household,” Chavez noted.

The dispute comes as communities across California celebrate Pride Month — recognized every June.

Chavez, who sponsored and attended Fresno’s Pride parade over the weekend, said the event focused on acceptance and mutual respect.

“Everybody there was just celebrating diversity, inclusion, respect, love, mutual differences, but still having that respect for each other,” Chavez said.

Meanwhile, Bredefeld highlighted that families of all backgrounds and faiths would be welcome to participate in Traditional Nuclear Family Month so long as they uphold traditional values.

“I hope on Tuesday, June 16th, the board passes it, and we can celebrate nuclear families, the role of mothers and fathers, traditional values, faith, this great country, morality, ethics, the very things that this country was founded on,” he said.

Chavez said he plans to vote against the measure when it comes before the board, arguing that the language could create unnecessary division.

“Our LGBTQ is born like that. That’s how God made them. And we need to be accepting and respectful of that. So I think, you know, using language that can be divisive is not good for Fresno. So I’m not going to be supporting that on Tuesday. And I’m going to speak up about that.”
