The Boston Red Sox have now lost back-to-back games after winning three in a row, and their offense has started to stall once again. Many of their players are still freezing cold, and have been a true detriment to Boston.
One of those players is their veteran shortstop, Trevor Story. Story was one of the most vocal players about the firing of manager Alex Cora and the other coaches, leading people to think he could be on his way out. And now, with his very poor performance, he could still be out, but not because he chose to be.
Story’s fielding has been atrocious

Fielding has never been Story’s strong suit, but this year he’s been abysmal. For shortstops, he 26th in Outs Above Average (OAA) with a -1, and his fWAR is -0.4, making him arguably the worst shortstop in baseball.
However, this is where the problem comes in for the Sox. Other than shortstop, the Sox really don’t have another position to play him. He could go to second, but that’s currently occupied by Marcelo Mayer. DH is another choice, but Boston has too many DHs already, and the fact his hitting is definitely not worth putting in a position that is only for hitting.
His hitting has been no better

The Sox grabbed Story in 2022 to replace Xander Bogaerts as a slugging shortstop. He was great with the Colorado Rockies, but it seems Boston was fooled by the Coors Field Effect.
Story this season has only slashed .197/.237/.295/.532 with six doubles, two home runs, and 17 RBI in 30 games. He only has 11 hits on the season, and eight of them were for extra bases. If Story could work on his contact ability, his value would go back up again.
What could the Sox do

Here’s the Sox’ problem. They probably would like to move on from Story, but due to his atrocious stats and the $50 million left on his contract, no suitors will probably appear for him.
So at this point, Boston has to pray that he can at least start to replicate his stats from last year. If so, they have two choices: pawn him off at the trade deadline, or if they are in contention, the offseason.
