The Los Angeles Lakers know exactly where the problems start defensively, and it’s all over the place.
When looking at the current core, it doesn’t take much to see why the front office is scanning the trade market for help on the defensive side of the basketball.
Sam Amick of The Athletic had the latest on who the Lakers are targeting, and there are some new names.
“When healthy, the odds of Dončić, Reaves and James providing an adequate line of defense on the perimeter are slim to none,” Amick wrote. “So, can president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka land someone like New Orleans’ Herb Jones (not currently believed to be available), Derrick Jones (for the right price) or Ellis (ditto), who could aid this cause?”
Derrick Jones’ name popping up is very interesting. He’s on a struggling Los Angeles Clippers team that might decide to sell. However, it’s tough to see why the Clippers would help the Lakers win a championship.
Regardless, this would be about finding someone who can actually play defense in the playoffs. He’s big, athletic, and capable of guarding multiple positions, which is exactly what the Lakers lack when games tighten up.
Herb Jones may be the ideal option, and one Lakers fans want, but if he’s truly unavailable, the Lakers will have to look elsewhere.
