Lakers reportedly in bidding war with Bucks, Clippers, Cavs for $46M ex-Warriors NBA champion

The Los Angeles Lakers have been searching for defensive-minded wings this offseason. However, the team also has the opportunity to pursue Jonathan Kuminga, who brings value on both ends of the floor.

Kuminga remains an intriguing option for teams around the league because of his age, athleticism, and potential to continue developing into a more complete player. The Lakers have reportedly maintained interest in him for several weeks.

“There is mutual free agent interest between Jonathan Kuminga and the Lakers, per Jovan Buha. Los Angeles continues to work behind the scenes to secure Kuminga’s commitment as their new wing addition,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.

The process of getting a deal done for Kuminga has been complicated, whether it is agreeing on contract terms or finding a path to complete a sign-and-trade. One of the latest updates is that the Lakers have reportedly offered him a two-year, $20 million contract to join the organization.

“Jonathan Kuminga is a player the Lakers are after, according to people with knowledge of the situation who said L.A. is looking at a two-year, $20-million deal for Kuminga, the sort of athletic wing player the Lakers need to start at small forward,” LA Times' Brad Turner wrote.

Several teams remain interested in Kuminga and the potential he brings to their roster. The former NBA champion has gained valuable experience early in his career by learning from some of the league’s top players. Now, it appears the Lakers have more competition than previously expected.

“Kuminga, 23, has also drawn sign-and-trade interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Milwaukee Bucks,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto wrote.

The Lakers’ biggest threat could be the Cleveland Cavaliers, as they are expected to become more aggressive if they miss out on LeBron James. Outside of Cleveland, Los Angeles could be one of the most appealing destinations for Kuminga due to the opportunity for a larger role.

The former NBA champion was previously on a $46 million contract before the Hawks declined his team option for next season. Kuminga’s free agency has become one of the more interesting storylines of the offseason, but the Lakers now know which teams they will be competing against for one of their top wing targets.
