The Los Angeles Lakers have employed some elite point guards over the years.
Magic Johnson and Jerry West are two former backcourt Lakers standouts who come to mind instantly.
However, as great as those players were, they can’t compete with current Lakers star guard Luka Doncic in a particular historical category.
“Luka Doncic now has the most 45-point double-doubles by a point guard in Lakers history,” Real Sports wrote on X/Twitter Thursday after Doncic’s 45-point, 14-assist outing against the Utah Jazz.
Doncic is undoubtedly on pace to become the best Lakers point guard of all time. The five-time All-Star is making a statement with Los Angeles during his first full season with the franchise, as he’s contributing 34.7 points, 8.8 assists, and 8.7 rebounds per game on a 19-7 Lakers squad.
Doncic’s awe-inspiring contributions have not only enabled him to keep the Lakers in contention for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference (they’re 5.5 games back from the Oklahoma City Thunder) but also strengthen his MVP case.
According to the NBA’s latest KIA MVP ladder, Doncic trails only Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic in the tight race for the most highly regarded individual award the league has to offer.
In a perfect world, Doncic would lead the Lakers to their first championship victory since 2020 while securing his first MVP nod in the process.
It’ll be interesting to see what the 26-year-old superstar has up his sleeves moving forward.
