John Cena's last match, which took place at Saturday Night's Main Event, has helped WWE to make history. The Never Seen 17 bid farewell to a decorated in-ring career after tapping out to Gunther on December 13.
After the match, the rest of the roster came out to pay their respect to Cena and gave him an emotional send-off. The night was a monumental occasion in the Stamford-based promotion's long history, and it turns out Cena had a parting contribution for WWE as well.
During an appearance on What Do You Wanna Talk About? With Cody Rhodes, the Franchise Player revealed he got to give one last toast in the locker room in his wrestling gear after the show. He mentioned the toast was to the numbers they did that night, which saw the largest arena gate in WWE history.
"I got to have one last beer in the locker room in my gear. In my socks, my kneepads, the jorts. And I made a toast, and the toast was to the metrics of the evening. Largest arena (gate) in WWE history, largest for the building itself. Very rarely do we hit those milestones," he said. The Champ's farewell match at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., was attended by 19,232. The event led to the highest-grossing arena gate in WWE history, breaking the record set at Money in the Bank at the Intuit Dome in June in L.A., according to WWE.
WWE reportedly planning big John Cena project
John Cena may have retired from in-ring competition, but it won't be the last fans will see of him.
He has signed a five-year deal to be the company's ambassador, and WWE is already working on a big project involving him.
Wrestlevotes on Fightful Select reported that the promotion is working on a documentary focused around Cena's retirement. The report mentions that documentary crews were present at Saturday Night's Main Event for filming during his final match.
The documentary is planned for a mid-2026 release. Fans can expect more appearances from John Cena in WWE in the near future given his new contract.
