The Los Angeles Lakers won’t make it far without consistent three-point shooting production.
If Luka Doncic can’t rely on his perimeter-oriented teammates to knock down triples at a high clip, it’s safe to say the franchise’s postseason struggles will continue.
Although Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard are the two highly dependable Lakers sharpshooters, Bleacher Report’s Andrew Peters is under the impression that trading for an ex-Golden State Warriors splash brother will elevate the Los Angeles' long-range shooting to new heights.
“The 36-year-old (Klay) Thompson may have had the worst statistical year of his career last season, but he still shot an efficient 38.3% from deep,” Peters wrote Wednesday.
“One of the best sharpshooters in NBA history, Thompson is still capable of coming off the bench to provide some shooting."
“His contract is a little pricey for what he provides now, but Dallas (Mavericks) may be willing to eat some of his salary to increase his trade value. If the Mavs can take some of the financial burden off of Thompson's contract, he could be a fit for the Lakers as they look to make a title run.”
“Los Angeles pursued Thompson two offseasons ago, though he ultimately went with the Mavs. Perhaps now could be the time to give Luka Doncic and (potentially) LeBron James another sharpshooter to work with.”
Thompson’s resume as a majestic three-point specialist would match up well with anyone’s. The Washington State product has connected 40% from beyond the arc nine times in his career, with his worst season (shooting-wise) being more impressive than some players’ best (38.3% last year, as Peters mentioned).
Is the future Hall of Famer still an effective rip-and-go offensive threat who regularly keeps defenders on their toes? Not necessarily, but his ability to wreak havoc from deep would instantly make him one of the most prolific shooters on the Lakers’ 2026-27 roster.
