Lakers’ LeBron James makes injury announcement as contract decision looms

LeBron James name hovers over the upcoming NBA offseason, as it often does.

That’s just one of many things that exemplify the greatness of the 40-year old legend. Even now, he has the potential to swing the course of the NBA.

As the Lakers and the rest of the basketball world await news on James’ decision on his contract player option for 2025-26, there’s also lingering concern about his left knee.

James sprained his MCL during the playoffs before the Lakers’ season ended.

On his new podcast episode with Steve Nash, James shared a quick injury update for his Mind The Game listeners.

“It’s getting better. Last time we spoke,” James said, then paused without revealing more. “Yeah, it’s getting better.”

The good news for LeBron is that next NBA season is a long way away. No matter what he decides with his contract, he has a handful of months to make sure his body is in tip-top shape for another season of the professional basketball grind.

If it was last summer, there’d be more immediate concern in an Olympic year. This summer, though, LeBron has already said he plans to spend ample time watching his daughter Zhuri play volleyball. Spectating should keep him off his feet and healing right up.

There’s always the outside chance that the aging star retires, but it seems more likely he’ll stick around and chase another championship, whether in L.A. or anywhere.

James has so often seemed invincible during his NBA career, and this latest injury is proof that that’s not going to be true forever. But there’s plenty of time to heal up, and James’ crown should still fit when the new season rolls around.
