The Los Angeles Lakers have reached the point of the season where they have to do something. A few bad losses, and the Lakers don't seem to be nearly as good as many were hoping they would be a few months ago.
They aren’t looking for a superstar as of now, but that doesn't mean the Lakers can't get better with some marginal moves.
That’s the path Dan Woike took in a recent trade that would include three teams. It’s not flashy or anything crazy, but as the Lakers have found out throughout their existence, those big trades don’t always work.
Lakers receive: Saddiq Bey, Devin Carter, Keon Ellis
New Orleans Pelicans receive: Dalton Knecht, Doug McDermott, two future second-round picks
Sacramento Kings receive: Maxi Kleber, Lakers’ 2031 first-round pick (top-10 protected)
“These are the kinds of players the Lakers could be realistically targeting, minus Carter, who would be a buy-low candidate with defensive upside. Bey is on a good contract, and Ellis has several admirers around the league,” he wrote.
“Would you trust either of them to play big minutes as a primary defender in a playoff series?”
Bey and Ellis help the team with above-average defense and the ability to shoot 3-pointers.
There was hope that Carter would be a very good player after his days at Providence, but he hasn't necessarily figured it out at the highest level.
However, considering what Bey and Ellis could do, taking that gamble on Carter would make sense.
