Lakers insider gives shattering sign-and-trade update on ex-Warriors champion Jonathan Kuminga

The Los Angeles Lakers have been far more active this offseason than they were over the previous two summers. With LeBron James not returning, the organization has shifted its focus toward building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.

Following James' departure, finding a starting-caliber wing has become one of the Lakers' top priorities. One player they have shown significant interest in is former NBA champion Jonathan Kuminga.

“There is mutual free agent interest between Jonathan Kuminga and the Lakers, per Jovan Buha. Los Angeles continues to work behind the scenes to secure Kuminga’s commitment as their new wing addition,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.

Last week, Los Angeles signed free agent wing Ziaire Williams, but that move appeared to be more about adding depth. Kuminga would project as the Lakers' starting wing, and despite signing Williams, Los Angeles continues to pursue the former NBA champion.

“There remains strong mutual interest between the Lakers and Jonathan Kuminga as a sign-and-trade route continues to be explored. Kuminga would immediately become LA’s starting power forward alongside Walker Kessler in their newly revamped frontcourt,” Sidery posted.

The Lakers remain highly engaged in trying to find a way to complete a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks. However, the latest update from Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin suggests there may no longer be a realistic path to getting a deal across the finish line.

“Returning to the Hawks doesn’t feel like an option for Kuminga. If LeBron goes to Cleveland, I have no idea what options other than the Lakers he has. If he wants to get paid a reasonable amount, he’s gotta be hoping Atlanta changes the stance they currently have on a S&T,” Irwin posted.

That update is a significant blow to the Lakers, who have been targeting Kuminga as a long-term fit alongside Dončić and Reaves. His age, athleticism, and championship experience would make him an ideal addition to Los Angeles' young core.

The Lakers are hoping to make a deep playoff run in the near future, and adding a player with NBA Finals experience would only strengthen their roster. However, based on the latest reporting, Los Angeles no longer appears to be in a favorable position to complete a sign-and-trade for Kuminga.
