Lakers' championship dreams ride on $16M 'diva' being elite with Luka Doncic, LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are starting to hit their stride and look like the team they were destined to be all season. One of LeBron James’ biggest priorities coming into 2026 was playing for a legitimate title contender.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Rich Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

If the Lakers want to be a true contender, it will come down to how committed Deandre Ayton is. When he is fully engaged, the Lakers are in excellent shape.

“When Ayton is locked in, the Lakers look elite. Luka Doncic has them playing like a serious threat. LA has won six straight, including victories over the Knicks, Timberwolves, Nuggets, and Rockets. Sadly, it could quickly fall apart if DA stops playing his role. It shouldn't happen, but it has in the past. Hopefully, the bright lights of the playoffs get the big man to play as he did down the stretch against the Rockets. It would give the Lakers a puncher’s chance, but all fans can do is hope,” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote.

Concerns with Ayton persist, particularly regarding his reputation as a locker room issue.

“The word around the league is not good about Deandre Ayton... right now he's been labeled as a diva, as a cancer in the locker room... he has to change a lot about himself or he will find his career being shortened,” ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins said.

If Ayton can put his pride aside and focus on the team, the Lakers have the potential for a deep postseason run. However, if the same old Ayton shows up and lets emotions take over, LA could be in serious trouble.

The good news for the Lakers is that Doncic, James, and Austin Reaves are not going to let one player drag the team down. It’s clear that the Lakers will need Ayton on the court at all costs to have a legitimate chance.
