The San Francisco 49ers collected a win on Sunday over the Tennessee Titans in Santa Clara, moving to 10-4 on the season and keeping pace with the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams for the NFC West crown.
It has been an interesting season for the 49ers, to say the least, with multiple injuries to big-time players on both sides. Brock Purdy is missing nearly half of the regular season with turf toe, causing former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones to take over, and, shockingly, to some, leading them to a 4-2 record with him as the starter.
On the defensive side, two staples to their core went down with season-ending injuries. Defensive end Nick Bosa tore his ACL in Week 3 of the season against the Arizona Cardinals, and just three weeks later, they lost linebacker Fred Warner to a fractured right ankle in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, the biggest financial injury came last season against the Kansas City Chiefs, when wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk tore an ACL in the first season of his newly signed contract, which would pay him $30 million per year.
Initially, the expectation was for Aiyuk to return to the team during the mid-point of this season, but that did not prove to be the case as the receiver faced multiple setbacks.
Reports came out about a month ago that a split was likely to occur between the two parties, and on Saturday it was seemingly confirmed as the team officially placed Aiyuk on the reverse/left squad list ending his 2025 season.
“It’s simple for me I mean I haven’t seen him in a month… and it hasn’t been an issue with our team at all”, head coach Kyle Shanahan, gave his thoughts and explanation of why this move was made after Sunday’s win.
