Knicks' Guerschon Yabusele compared to former Mavericks disappointment

The New York Knicks are thriving at the right time.

Led by Jalen Brunson, the Knicks have won nine of their last 10 games and will face the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Cup championship game on Tuesday.

But not every Knicks player is contributing as much as anticipated. Power forward Guerschon Yabusele does not seem to be a suitable fit within the Knicks' offense, and he recently spoke out that a lack of minutes off the bench has been frustrating.

Yabusele, who signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Knicks during the summer, is averaging just 9.8 minutes, three points, and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Yabusele's time in New York could be coming to an end

A separation between Yabusele and the Knicks may make sense if his current limited role continues.

"Yabusele was the team’s top offseason acquisition, but he has played 15 minutes in a game twice all season," The Athletic's Law Murray wrote Monday. "His signing reminds me of when Dallas signed Grant Williams two years ago; Williams was ultimately traded midway through his lone season with the Mavericks."

Williams averaged 26.4 minutes per game in 47 contests during the 2023-24 season with the Mavericks, but was flipped to the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that included P.J. Washington.

Yabusele returned to the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers last season after a five-year hiatus playing overseas. His presence with the Knicks is not hurting their win-loss record, but the front office may prefer to add him in a trade for a guard.
