Blockbuster trades aren’t foreign to the New York Knicks, as the organization acquired Mikal Bridges (2024), Karl-Anthony Towns (2024), and OG Anunoby (2023) via franchise-elevating deals.
Could the Knicks complete another trade to help complement they’re talent-filled roster? Sports Illustrated’s Jayesh Pagar thinks so, citing that New York should consider swinging a deal for LaVar Ball’s most talented son this season.
“In shocking recent news, Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is reportedly open to a trade, according to Yahoo Sports reporter Kelly Iko,” Pagar wrote Friday. "Ball, frustrated with the Hornets' disappointing 4-11 start this season, has sparked significant trade rumors.”
“For the New York Knicks, this development presents a promising opportunity, but also a complex challenge. Could Ball find his way to New York? At just 24 years old, LaMelo is a talented playmaker averaging 9.6 assists and over 21 points per game this season.”
“Known for his elite passing and ability to create shots, Ball could complement Jalen Brunson perfectly in the Knicks' backcourt.”
“Having two dynamic offensive players would open up the floor, boost scoring options, and elevate the team's championship potential. Pairing Ball with Brunson, along with stars like Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges, would give New York a creative and youthful core.”
While Lonzo, Ball’s eldest son, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is a skilled passer and stout on-ball defender, it would be preposterous to suggest that LaMelo doesn’t possess a higher upside and more effective skill set.
Whether channeling his inner Tom Brady and completing dazzling one-handed full-court dimes to his teammates, drilling his patented one-legged fadeaway jumper over outstretched arms, or slithering his way to the rim before finishing with a SportsCenter Top 10-worthy layup, Ball ensures he puts on a show every time he steps on the hardwood.
However, Ball’s entertaining play style hasn’t resulted in frequent team success with the Hornets, as Charlotte hasn’t sniffed the postseason with Ball leading the way.
The 24-year-old has also dealt with several injuries since making his NBA debut with the Hornets in late 2020, causing him to miss significant time on the hardwood.
Still, with Ball being a young superstar who can do it all on the offensive end and likely needs a change of scenery to reach his full potential, it may be worthwhile for the Knicks to invest in the electric 6-foot-7 point guard before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
