Kelvin Sampson’s Houston identity meets a different kind of March test against Texas A&M

For Kelvin Sampson, identity has never been complicated. It is built over time and it is tested daily.

Houston has been built on that foundation all season. It consists of defense, discipline, and competing on every possession. Against Texas A&M, it will be tested in a different way.

“Bucky [McMillan] does an awesome job of disrupting the game,” Sampson said. “That creates a lot of challenges.”

Texas A&M does not just play fast. It presses, rotates bodies, and forces decisions. It turns games into something uncomfortable, something less predictable. For most teams, that can be difficult to prepare for in a short turnaround.

For Houston, the answer is not to adjust its identity. It is to trust it.

“I think the core tenets…we’re teaching our kids the difference between playing hard and competing,” Sampson said. “It’s always been important to me.”

That distinction has shaped Houston’s consistency, even as this roster has required patience. The Cougars have relied heavily on young players throughout the season, growing through mistakes rather than avoiding them.

“This year has been our most challenging year with all these freshmen,” Sampson said. “We played four freshmen a lot of major minutes.”

Instead of turning to the transfer portal to solve those challenges, Houston has stayed committed to development.

“We just always grow our own food,” Sampson said. “Go out to the garden, pick it. We don’t go to the grocery store.”

That approach has not always been smooth, particularly on the defensive end. But it has created something that shows up in moments like this.

Sampson understands what is coming. He also understands what it takes to withstand it. “If it was easy, then more teams would do it,” he said.

For Houston, this is not just about advancing. It is about proving that what they have built still holds, even when everything around them is trying to break it.
