To say that Victor Wembanyama was the biggest reason for why the San Antonio Spurs won Game 1 over the Oklahoma City Thunder is not a hot take. Coach Mitch Johnson gave his star player all of the green lights during the night Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got his second NBA MVP trophy. But, the young superstar is not one to brag about himself. He instead uplifted the rest of the team and credited them for treading greatly in uncharted waters.
Wembanyama outlines Spurs' keys to beating Thunder
In an outsider's perspective looking in, it's not hard to proclaim that the Spurs simply just wanted the Game 1 win more. Despite having insane numbers from Victor Wembanyama, it was still a massive team effort that required two sets of overtime to decide. This is why the Spurs superstar gave a lot of credit to their team for holding it down despite the intense endurance battle against the Thunder, via the NBA on NBC broadcast.
"I don't even know. It's the first time were in this situation. Everybody had to step up. Everybody answered the call. We had to cover up for our guy (De'Aaron) Fox who will be hopefully available next game. We’re just built like this," Wembanyama said.
True enough, everyone on the Spurs contributed in securing this Game 1 win over the Thunder. Coach Mitch Johnson played everyone for at least six minutes each and emptied the Spurs rotation. Wembanyama along with Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie, and Stephon Castle all played more than 44 minutes. It was a clear team effort despite Wembanyama being the star of the show.
Obviously, winning Game 1 of this NBA Playoffs clash will not mean much if the Spurs collapse immediately after. If the Coach Johnson and Wembanyama have really decided that their keys to win lie in the hands of everyone answering the call, the Thunder might need to start packing up soon.
