The Kansas City Chiefs are relying on wide receiver Rashee Rice to take a massive leap in 2026.
Rice has shown a ton of promise through his first three seasons, especially during his rookie campaign in 2023 when he tallied 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns.
However, off-the-field issues have held Rice back in his career so far. The SMU product missed the first six games of the 2025 season after violating the NFL's personal conduct policy stemming from a multi-car crash on a Dallas highway, where the Chiefs receiver eventually pleaded guilty to two felony charges and served jail time.
When on the field in 2025, Rice was dynamic, posting 571 yards and five touchdowns on 53 receptions in eight games.
Rice is expected to be Kansas City's No. 1 receiver in 2026 for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but the 26-year-old is once again in trouble with the law.
Rice set to miss Chiefs OTAs after violating probation
According to NBC 5, Dallas County court documents show that Rice violated his probation from the 2024 car crash by testing positive for THC.
Rice will now be ordered to serve 30 days in jail and will be released on June 16, meaning he will miss Chiefs OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
Kansas City will take the field for OTAs for three days starting on May 26 and continuing through May 28, and will have a few more sessions from June 1 to June 3. Andy Reid's squad will then have mandatory minicamp from June 9 to June 11.
Chiefs must sign veteran receiver after Rice news
Rice is incredibly talented and has all the tools to be a top playmaker in a productive offense.
However, his off-the-field issues show that the Chiefs can't rely on him to be a consistent contributor, so general manager Brett Veach should look to add a veteran receiver through free agency as insurance.
Tyreek Hill and Stefon Diggs are the top remaining free agent receivers, but both of them also come with their own off-the-field issues, so Veach could opt to stay away.
Deebo Samuel, Keenan Allen, and DeAndre Hopkins are other solid veteran options the Chiefs could consider signing. Samuel and Allen were both decently productive in 2025 and still have some juice left, which makes them ideal targets for the Kansas City. Hopkins has slowed down in recent years, but a reunion with the Chiefs could still be on the table.
Nevertheless, in the wake of the Rice news, Kansas City needs to acquire a wide receiver who can play meaningful snaps for Reid's offense this year.
