John Cena wrestled his final match at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13. A recent report has revealed his role in the other matches on the card.
In addition to Cena's retirement match against Gunther, there were three other matches on the SNME card. Oba Femi vs. Cody Rhodes ended in a no-contest after Drew McIntyre interfered during the match.
Sol Ruca outsmarted Bayley in the only women's match on the card, while AJ Styles and Dragon Lee defeated the young duo of Je'Von Evans and Leon Slater. Joe Hendry and R-Truth also had a segment with The Miz before the main event.
According to Fightful Select, John Cena was the "driving force" backstage to have a WWE vs. NXT match card at SNME. However, Cena didn't choose the stars who were featured at the event, and he had no say on the outcome of all three matches.
In the main event, John Cena shockingly tapped out to Gunther to end his WWE career. It was Cena's first submission loss in over 20 years, with Kurt Angle being the last star to make him tap out.
Triple H explains why John Cena tapped out against Gunther
After Triple H came out to congratulate John Cena on his career, he was showered with a lot of boos. WWE's chief of content explained on the SNME Postshow why Cena was made to submit in his final match despite his iconic phrase of "Never Give Up."
"John has done that his entire career, and I’m going to do that my entire career. I will do what I believe is right for this business. It just is what it is. I understand that’s tough for people to understand, but it’s part of what we do. That is the role we have chosen," Cena said.
