John Cena already holds the record for most world title reigns with 17 after beating Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41. However, the latest reports suggest that the company discussed the possibility of making Cena an 18-time WWE World Champion.

One of the stories for Cena's farewell tour is his pursuit of world title No. 17 to break Ric Flair's record. He failed to win the Royal Rumble before earning a shot at Rhodes by winning Elimination Chamber. He also turned heel, which ensured his record-breaking win at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas.

With John Cena's retirement tour set to conclude on December 13 at Saturday Night's Main Event in Washington, D.C., there were some interesting plans pitched for The GOAT. Fightful Select reported that there were discussions about putting another world title on Cena amid Seth Rollins' legitimate shoulder injury.

WWE went with a different plan, a tournament to determine John Cena's final opponent. There will be 16 stars from RAW, SmackDown and NXT, though Cena mentioned the possibility of other stars not under a WWE deal being a part of it.

The first four names announced for the Last Time is Now tournament were Sheamus, Damian Priest, Rusev and Shinsuke Nakamura. Cena has history with both Sheamus and Rusev during his illustrious career.

John Cena has 4 appearances left in his farewell tour

The end is near for John Cena's in-ring career, with four appearances left on his farewell tour. Cena is set to appear next Monday on RAW in his final appearance in his hometown of Boston. There will be two tournament matches on the card, so he's likely going to make his presence felt there.

Cena is also scheduled for the November 17 episode of RAW in New York City, which will be his final appearance as an active performer at Madison Square Garden. His last two dates are at Survivor Series: WarGames in San Diego and Saturday Night's Main Event in Washington, D.C.

There are rumors that Cena could face Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship at Survivor Series, while Gunther has been tipped to be his final opponent for months now, though nothing has been confirmed as of this writing.
