The Buffalo Bills made very few big moves in the offseason. They signed role-player free agents and focused on drafting ready-to-play rookies who could fill specific roles. The one big move they made, though, was signing five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Joey Bosa.
Many were concerned about the oft-injured former Charger joining the fray. When he missed all of OTAs due to a calf injury, those worried fans were already seeing the writing on the wall. Over the first two weeks of the season, though, Bosa is giving the Bills what they were hoping to get.
While he struggled early against the Baltimore Ravens with keeping Lamar Jackson contained, specifically on zone read runs, he forced a fumble that resulted in a 15-yard loss for the Ravens in the game which ended with the Bills coming back from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Baltimore. In Week 2 against the Jets, Bosa built on that performance.
Bosa recorded his first sack in a Bills uniform, and forced two more fumbles, giving him three punch outs through two weeks. This is what the Bills need Bosa to be - a disruptor forcing turnovers and getting to the quarterback. Plays like that are what the Bills have been missing in the postseason, specifically in losses to the Kansas City Chiefs. They haven't been able to get to Patrick Mahomes, and if you can't get to him, odds are you aren't going to beat the Chiefs.
Bosa doesn't have to have a big Red "S" on his chest for his time in Buffalo to be successful. If he is a supporting character that plays his specific role well, the Bills have a real shot at getting over the dreaded hump.
