JJ Redick gets honest that LeBron James should be playing a more subdued role to succeed

The Los Angeles Lakers have pivoted in a new direction when it comes to their building block. After a few seasons with LeBron James as the clear superstar player, that has changed due to Luka Doncic's presence.

James is in his 40s now, which means he is not the same athletic player most people know about. Nowadays, he is not as effective, which has led to Doncic and the Lakers fully appreciating his role within the team.

Redick admits LeBron has a new optimal role on the Lakers

For the longest time, LeBron has always been the star for his teams. He has been at the forefront as the Lakers' best player for years. However, James is now an older player, so the franchise is moving on to a logical star with Doncic.

With Austin Reaves' breakout, he could also be higher on the totem pole than James. It is quite normal to have superstars phased out, especially since James is playing in his 23rd season right now.

Redick knows what it takes for the Lakers to win. That still involves LeBron as one of the most important players on the roster. However, it could involve him being third in the priority list behind Doncic and Reaves.

"He’s still going to be, and still has been, a high-usage player relative to your average player. The best thing for our team is being the third-highest-used player, you know, and obviously there’s been stretches of the year where he’s had to do more with injuries or guys being out of lineup," Redick said after the Lakers' game against the Rockets.

It will be a challenging role to play for such an awesome player. However, that usually happens in sports, and it will continue to happen to any older player. LeBron is still a massive name, but everyone will realize the truth.
