The relationship between New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn might not be as strong as it seems.
That comes from legendary New York sports radio host Mike Francesa, who said on his podcast that Glenn's and Mougey's relationship "is not so buddy-buddy."
Francesa went on to reveal that owner Woody Johnson has given Mougey more power over Glenn, which appears to be a shift after Johnson had previously called Mougey Glenn's "sidekick" in their introductory press conference.
Mougey has apparently been exercising his power over Glenn, also.
One example, Francesa says, is that Mougey blocked the hiring of Wink Martindale as the team's defensive coordinator. The Jets eventually hired Brian Duker instead.
Another disagreement between the two was the Geno Smith trade, something Mougey wanted. Glenn's preference, Francesa says, was Kirk Cousins (H/T Elite Sports NY).
Francesa goes on to say that if the power dynamic has shifted and Mougey is the one making all the decisions, that's something the Jets should come out and say.
“If Mougey’s in charge, let him come out and be in charge,” he said. “Don’t hide it. Don’t pin everything on Aaron Glenn. If Aaron Glenn is just the coach and he’s not making any personnel decisions, let’s know that. Let’s see where we are right now as we go forward and put the praise and the blame where it belongs.”
While Mougey might be the head honcho in New York, Francesa still believes the leash with Glenn could be short if the Jets don't turn it around in 2026.
In fact, he believes new offensive coordinator Frank Reich is waiting in the wings to take the job if Glenn falls on his face once again.
