Jets make embarrassing NFL history not seen since at least 1941 with Packers' loss

The New York Jets lost to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 despite having a lead late in the game and multiple chances to pull off the upset victory and begin 2-0.

Instead, they lost in overtime, 20-17, and are now 1-1 as they head into Week 3 against the Detroit Lions. But this Week 2 loss to the Packers was more than just a brutal loss. It made some embarrassing NFL history.

As ESPN's Rich Cimini shared on Twitter/x, the Jets' loss to the Packers was the first time since at least 1941 that a team lost a game despite having a yards, penalty, and turnover advantage. Teams were 44-0 in this situation. But now, thanks to the Jets, teams are 44-1.

"They became the first team on record (since 1941) to lose a game with ... Holding opponent to less than 200 yards (199); Opponent having 100+ penalty yards (133); Positive turnover margin (+1). Entering today, teams were 44-0 in that spot," Cimini shared.

Since 1941, teams that won the turnover battle, saw their opponent record at least 100 penalty yards, and also held their opponent under 200 total yards were undefeated.

But now, thanks to this embarrassing Jets loss, teams are 44-1 in such situations. This is quite the brutal statistic for the Jets, and it shows just how badly things went in this loss to the Packers.

They should've won this Week 2 matchup and began 2-0. Instead, they barely lost and now sit at 1-1, tied with the New England Patriots in the AFC East.

While not part of this history, the Jets have also extended their interception drought another game, which adds insult to injury on top of this loss.

Even though the Jets won over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 and played fairly well for most of Week 2, the loss to the Packers is a brutal way to begin the season.

For all of the things that went right in Week 2, the win-loss column only indicates that the Jets lost this matchup. The Jets will surely lose plenty more games this year, but this loss might be a hard one to beat for most embarrassing of the season.
