Jets have reached a Connor Hellebuyck crossroads

The Winnipeg Jets need to be better, or their goalie might want to find a new uniform to wear.

Connor Hellebuyck clearly wasn't thrilled in his end-of-season comments. Too often this season, the team the Jets put on the ice wasn't good enough.

Yes, Hellebuyck's stats took a step back, but goalies are never able to be analyzed in a vacuum. If the team in front of Hellebuyck was worse, then it would stand to reason that his output would be worse, too.

If the Jets aren't careful, they may not keep their Vezina-level goalie for too much longer.

NHL insider David Pagnotta warned in a new article on Monday that the path forward with the Jets and Hellebuyck isn't assured.

"Some teams are curious as to the future of Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck after his end-of-season remarks," Pagnotta wrote. "The Jets don’t want to move him, that’s clear, but that isn’t calming the waters. Winnipeg needs to make some improvements, specifically to their second-line, or tougher comments may come from the crease."

For a bad team, a player like Hellebuyck almost has to feel like a luxury. There's a case to be made that the Jets might benefit from shopping their star goalie for a boatload of assets to jumpstart a rebuild.

Otherwise, Winnipeg has to find ways to improve the roster enough in the immediate to go from out of the playoffs in 2025-26 to a contender in 2026-27.

Having Hellebuyck in the goal creates a lot of potential, but it's about much more than him. Clearly, the goalie himself knows that, and he's hoping the Winnipeg decision makers can push the Jets' roster in the right direction.
