Jets could be what saves the NFL from one of the ugliest weeks in league history

During Week 8 of the NFL season, six teams were on bye, resulting in just 13 games played across the NFL. Through Sunday Night Football, all but one of those games played have been decided by double-digits or more.

It's been an ugly week of football across the NFL, with most games either being blowouts or dominant wins with little at stake at the end of the game. As Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk points out, this week has been one of the ugliest in NFL history so far.

However, the one team that, so far, has saved the NFL from one of the ugliest weeks in NFL history from being even uglier is the New York Jets. With a 39-38 comeback win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Jets were the only team through Sunday Night Football to win by fewer than 10 points.

How the Jets might've saved the NFL from one of the ugliest weeks in league history

The Jets' matchup against the Bengals was a big one. A loss would've had the Jets, with new head coach Aaron Glenn, as the sole winless team heading into the bye week.

It'd be a rough situation regardless, but after a week of drama surrounding the starting quarterback and rough comments from owner Woody Johnson in defense of Glenn, a loss would've made things very ugly over the bye week.

But instead, the Jets won an incredible game, earning Glenn his first win, giving Fields a pseudo-revenge game, and in turn, saving the NFL from one of the ugliest weeks in NFL history.

There is still one game left to be played, as the Kansas City Chiefs play the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football. If that matchup ends with a double-digit win for the Chiefs, Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season would be the first time since 1970 that all but one game ended in double-digit scores.

If that Chiefs and Commanders matchup ends in a two-score game, which is very possible with the Commanders without Jayden Daniels, the Jets would have saved the NFL from one of the worst weeks in league history.

Across the NFL, every other game than the Jets and Bengals thriller before Monday Night Football has been at least a two-score game. The scores around the NFL were all lopsided affairs, with the closest game not including the Jets-Bengals being a 35-25 Green Bay Packers win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants 38-20. The Miami Dolphins stunned the Atlanta Falcons 34-10, and the Baltimore Ravens beat the Chicago Bears 30-16.

The Buffalo Bills won 40-9 over the Carolina Panthers, the Houston Texans beat the San Francisco 49ers 26-15, the New England Patriots beat the Cleveland Browns 32-13, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New Orleans Saints 23-3.

On Thursday Night Football, the Los Angeles Chargers crushed the Minnesota Vikings 37-10. Lastly, the Denver Broncos blew out the Dallas Cowboys 44-24 while the Indianapolis Colts continued their reign of terror over the NFL with a 38-14 win over the Tennessee Titans.

The Chiefs welcome the Commanders to Kansas City in the last game of the week for the NFL to avoid having all but one game end with a double-digit difference in scoring. If the Chiefs win by two scores, it'd mark the first time since 1970 that all but one game was decided by at least 10 points.

It's already an ugly week, but the struggling Jets easily could've been blown out by the Bengals in Week 8. Instead, their comeback 39-38 win has, so far, saved the NFL from one of the ugliest weeks in league history.

As long as the Chiefs or Commanders win by at least 10 points, it'd be the ugliest week in over half a century. It could've been even worse if it weren't for the Jets' win over the Bengals, saving Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season from being one of the ugliest in league history.
