Jason Kelce plays on nostalgia in new fragrance venture

Jason Kelce is taking on the fragrance world.

The retired Philadelphia Eagles center revealed that he would be partnering with Kingsford Charcoal to embark on their first-ever cologne on Nov. 3. Kelce is now the face of the charcoal company’s “Slow Burn” fragrance. The cologne includes notes of charred hardwood, fire ember, carbon clove, sawdust and powder smolder while casting the iconic smoky aroma of wood-fired charcoal.

Kelce shared in his opening remarks at the Kingsford event in New York City on Oct. 29 that charcoal brings back memories of his childhood backyard in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, alongside his younger brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, mom, Donna Kelce, and father, Ed Kelce.

Has Jason Kelce always wanted to have a signature fragrance?

While charcoal is a scent that is common upon tailgates and backyard barbecues, Kelce shared that there’s a deeper meaning to his partnership with Kingsford for him.

“I've never been interested in being in the fragrance game. Not one bit, but charcoal,  I can get behind,” the former Eagles center exclusively told Sporting News.

“There is something with charcoal in particular that I really think about vivid memories, objects, people, places and as opposed to a lot of fragrances. I was just like, ‘Oh, this smells good or bad.’ This one is really usually tied to very specific things for people, which is fun.”

Kingsford has been a namesake in the charcoal industry for over a century. While, like Kelce, many fans can relate to the nostalgic smell of burning charcoal, some wonder why now?

Mitchell O’Furey, the head of marketing at Kingsford, shared why the company has decided to expand into the fragrance industry with the help of Kelce.

“Kingsford has spent over a century perfecting the art of charcoal grilling, so who better to create the first-ever charcoal-inspired fragrance?” said O’Furey in a statement. “With Slow Burn, we’ve captured the backyard experience of grilling in a fragrance that’s not only bold, fun and quintessentially Kingsford but stokes that neighbor envy with the smoky smell.

"Whether you’re firing up the grill or heading out for a night on the town, this fragrance is all about savoring life’s most flavorful moments.”

Jason Kelce’s sultry fragrance video

Ahead of the official launch, Kelce took to Instagram to share a video of him grilling chicken and steak as the fragrance of charcoal burns around him.

In several shots, he changes into his No. 62 denim overalls -- a nod to his Eagles jersey number -- takes a bag of charcoal and puts it onto the grill himself before the black bottle of Slow Burn previews.

“Meet Slow Burn by @kingsford …the answer to your cravings. That nostalgic charcoal smell always reminds me of food, football, and good times with my family. Now, it’s all bottled up in this smoky scent. With Slow Burn, you can smell like the grill master, even when you’re off duty,” Kelce captioned the video.

Beginning November 3 at noon E.T., fans can purchase their own 2 oz. bottle of Slow Burn for $30.62, available exclusively at Kingsford.com — but only while supplies last.
