Jared Verse had a less-than-spectacular debut for the Cleveland Browns

There was more hope for Jared Verse's Cleveland Browns debut than what fans saw on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Verse, a former two-time Pro Bowler for the Los Angeles Rams, made his Browns debut with just four tackles, one for a loss, but had no sacks or even hits on the quarterback. Considering he was seen as a huge get in the trade of Myles Garrett from the Browns, many were hoping for a more impactful outing.

Instead, the Jaguars dominated the Browns all game long on both sides of the ball. Especially on offense, where Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdowns on the day, all while being sacked just once by the Browns. The Jaguars kept Lawrence's jersey pretty clean, as the Jags QB was hardly hit all day.

The only Browns player to get a sack was 2025 first-rounder Mason Graham, who played as well as anyone could play when their team is systematically dismantled for four straight quarters. 

Jared Verse's impact on the Cleveland Browns will likely look different than Myles Garrett's

Verse's impact on the loss is nominal at best, but he should have better games as the season goes on. He just won't have games that remind you of Garrett. After all, they're vastly different types of players. For his career, Verse only has 12 sacks because he's not the same type of player Garrett is. Expecting him to get a sack or two every game is simply unrealistic for Verse, as he's an all-around impact player.

Verse is someone many see as a good run-stopping end. That wasn't something you could say about Garrett, who was often criticized for his lack of support against the run. Garrett was given a pass for that, as his impact against an opposing offense's passing game was so impressive that he elevated the team around him.

Verse doesn't have that same top-end playmaking that Garrett had, but he could arguably be considered a more consistent player, with a higher floor than Garrett but a lower ceiling. Meaning he'll be more consistent in a game.
